Philosophy Essay -- Socrates
There are three different parts of elements in oneââ¬â¢s soul called: Reason, physical appetites and spirit due to the inner conflict. Each part of the soul is doing its own job. A man can have two different responses from his inner world when he has a conflict to decide. For example, a man was thirsty. He wants to drink some water because his appetite is telling him that he needs to quench. While his reason part will list out all the rational reasons for avoiding him from drinking, such as the water can make you sick. When the manââ¬â¢s desire was higher than reason then the sprite will appear to support with appetite (138). However there is another situation when the spirit will help reason out. ââ¬Å"When the soul is divided into factions, it is far more ready to be up in arms on the side of reasonâ⬠(138). Reason can consider as wisdom because it is the leader of the soul. It gives rational orders for spirit to follow, so they could work together to hold the appetite s. Then spirit can symbolize courage because the spirit is not afraid of against enemies in order to carry out its mission for holding the appetites in all circumstances because appetite is like the many-headed of the monster as it mentions in Chapter XXXIV. The many-headed symbolized the divided mind of the monster. It needs the lion to help the man to control the many-headed monster since the power of the man will be weak when there are many desires of the monster. Hence, the man symbolized the reason and the lion symbolized the spirit. Moreover, there shouldnââ¬â¢t be any internal conflict between these three since they are all doing a great job. This phenomenon of performing good cooperation is called temperance. According to Socrates ââ¬Å"the reason for all this is that each part ... ... careful since once people had chosen for the character they want to be such as be an animal or human being, and then itââ¬â¢s their duty to be responsible for their decision. At the end of the story it tells the part when people pass through the River of Unmindfulness. That all the people ââ¬Å"Required to drink a certain measure of this water, and some have not the wisdom to save them from drinking more. Every man as he drinks forgets everythingâ⬠(359). Which means if a person drinks too much water then he will not remember that there always has penalty for being unjust, thus his moral will not going to be increased because he will keep doing unjust thing and thinks there is no punish for it. In conclusion because of immortality, people understand the concept of being unjust need to bear the punishment, which helps a person, can have better moral understanding. Psychological Pricing
MKT 521 *Psychological Pricing S*trategy {draw:frame} Reference Pricing. ââ¬â Any business can leverage on reference pricing by positioning their product in the market place along with high value or luxury items to make consumers perceive that its product fits into the same category. However, if consumers feel that the product does not belong in that category the pricing and positioning strategy will not work and be it counterproductive for the product and the company. Two common forms of psychological pricing are odd pricing, and prestige pricing. Odd Pricing. ââ¬â In a study conducted by Schindler & Kibarian in 1996 they tested odd pricing using three versions of a direct mail catalog for women's clothing. ââ¬Å"The catalogs were identical except for the prices which ended with 00, 99 or 88. The version with prices ending in 99 generated 8% more sales volume and had more purchasers than the 00-ending version. The 88-ending catalog produced a similar sales volume and number of purchasers to the 00-ending versionâ⬠. In this example we can clearly see how the consumer perception of better value directly impacted sales, even though there was an alternative that ended in 88 which will actually be lower in value was not identified by consumers. Luxury *Prestige Pricing*. ââ¬â {draw:frame} Higher prices usually denote higher quality. Luxury brands are a perfect fit of this strategy. Another example of companies that use prestige pricing in the car industry are Mercedes-Benz, Ferrari and Rolls Royce. Psychological pricing is a good strategy to use when the company is certain that it will be the best-fit for the product, otherwise it can be counterproductive. Police Diversity Essay
Racial discrimination is an issue that so many professionals know about. Dealing with it may be the problem, but attempts to deal with it have been shown since the early times when it was noticed. According to Zeisel, there is evidence that the federal courts of appeal have been urged to take action on the administration of death sentences. Zeises notes that the death sentences in the federal courts, which he writes as a Florida experience, were administered discriminating against the black people (1981). In his writing, Zeisel states that two petitioners had provided evidence showing that the black offenders were being discriminated. The petitioners are, Maxwell V. Bishop who provided evidence to show that the black offenders were being discriminated against, and a petitioner in Spinkerllink v. Wainwright, who provided data showing that murderers of the white people were being discriminated against. This report by the petitioner from Spinkerllink indicated that there were high chances of murderers of the white to end up in death rows than murderers of the black people Zeisel, 1981). This though never received any action as the courts are noted to have refused to obtain evidence of racial discrimination. Zeisel notes that the data available in the criminal justice system of Florida, prove that there have been such kinds of discrimination (1981). This is a case that was identified in the 1980ââ¬â¢s, but does it exist today? Has the system changed? Racial discrimination has been a major problem in most federal courts with most minorities, especially the black people, facing cruel judgments than the white people. Some reports indicate that more blacks are found behind bars than whites considering their number in the total American population. The people are few in number, yet if the number of people in prison is compared to the white people in prison, they are almost half the whites total. This is the aim of this paper. Analysis of data about arrests made in Florida will be done to determine if the minorities are arrested more and if still, there is racial discrimination. Data to be analyzed was obtained from the Florida department of Law enforcement, which was recorded in the year 2004 by UCR. Analysis Do minority commit more crimes? According to the statistics on arrests by age and race in Florida, there are several offenses for which the white, Indians and the black people were arrested. Whites constituted a bigger group of people arrested with a total of 672,987, this is followed by the black people who were a total of 351,871. The total Indians arrested were 1,496 (Department of Law Enforcement, 2005). There are some offenses that no Indian was arrested at all, for example bribery and embezzlement. Comparing this to the other groups, a total of 38 whites were arrested for bribery and 20 black people for the same offense. In the case of embezzlement, 363 blacks were arrested while 749 whites were arrested(Department of Law Enforcement, 2005. The offense categorized as miscellaneous had the highest number of offenders with 299, 442 white offenders, 159,378 black offenders and 1,034 Indian offenders. Drug arrest and simple assault also had high numbers of offenders. White people arrested for simple assault were 60, 018, while the black offenders in this case were 29,650, and the Indian offenders arrested for this case were 89. Drug arrests had these numbers; whites 84,829, black people 65,167 and Indians 112 (Department of Law Enforcement, 2005. These are examples from the data obtained about arrests made in the year 2004 under various offenses. Generally, the minority, which in this case is the black people, committed more crime. This is because the number of black people in Florida compared to the total population is small. Research reports show that in the year 2000, the percentage of non white people was 17. 8. The total population of Florida then was 15,982,824 (Schenker, 2008). From this data, it means that the non white people were only 2,844,943. This includes even the Indians. The population in the year 2007 is noted to be 18,680,367 indicating a growth of 16. 9%. This means that on average, each year, there was an approximate growth increase of 449,591 making an approximate of 177, 811,88 total population of Florida as at 2004. The rate of increase of the the non white population per year is approximated as 0. 31% (8,819) based on the fact that the total percentage increase of the total population by 2010 is 19. 8% (Schenker, 2008). This means that the total non white population based on the yearly increase was approximately 2,880,219 in 2004. If this population is compared with the approximated total population in 2004, then the number of non white people is small compared to white. This is proof that more blacks commit more crimes according to the data from the Florida Department of Law Enforcement. An example is in drug arrests. The number of white people arrested in this case is 84, 829. The total number of white people if approximated in the year 2004 was 14,900,969. From this the percentage of the white people arrested is 0. 569%. If this is compared to the number of black people arrested which is 65,167 on drug arrests, the percentage arrested to the nonwhite population is 2. 263%. This calculation is done using the total of non white people which includes Indians. If the number of Indians were excluded, then it means the total percentage would be higher. From this calculation, the number of black people arrested is higher by 1. 694%. How can this be judged? That these people commit more crimes? According to several sources, there have been so many cases of discrimination against black people living in America. This could just be a proof to it. It is though just an assumption since the number of people arrested cannot prove that the people are being discriminated against, though is a strong indication. Domnitiz and Knowles noted after research that black people were found to be guilty in police practices more than the white people. The economists note that ââ¬Å"unbiased police practices as the police plans to do, can not prove that the guilt rates of motorists will be equalized among all racesâ⬠This implies that however much the police try to show that they do not practice any racism in their policing, there is still knowledge by the public that there is racial discrimination in police practices. Domnitiz and Knowles indicated that motor vehicle search statistics show that the black motorists are singled out more that the white people (2006). The above case could therefore be considered as racial discrimination. Conclusionà From the above analysis, it is quite evident that there is racism. Just from the many sources that information is obtained, most of the cases are just indicating discrimination against the black people. In some sources though, black policemen were also found to be discriminative (Jaynes and Williams, 2007). This though is not indicated in the discussion but is an indication that even the black can discriminate against the other races. It may be therefore that, discrimination is due to the fact that the black are a minority. It is not easy to conclude this way though as there are other races in Florida too. What then can be the reason?

A Chip of Glass Ruby Responses
Showing his true feelings only this one time, Bamjee reveals his opinions when the police come to arrest his wife for participating in and promoting a cause that he is opposed to. Before and after that outburst of his though he really is rather distant and detached from his family and whatââ¬â¢s going on. As aloof as Bamjee is, he is also quite proud. He is proud that wealthy and influential people are coming and going through his house, but he is even more proud of his ethnicity. He is proud because he is Indian which means he is of a higher social status than the Bantu. 12. When Mrs. Bamjee was taken away by the police she reminded Bamjee about Ismailââ¬â¢s, Mrs. Bamjeeââ¬â¢s daughter Girlieââ¬â¢s fianceââ¬â¢s, engagement party. This shows that even in the midst of the arrest she keeps her cool and remains the good and normal wife that Bamjee fell in love with by reminding him of something as insignificant as an engagement party. Protesting and promoting equality, she is still a simple Indian woman who wants the best for her family and to respect the values of others (in this case, making sure not to offend Ismail by not showing up to his party). 13. In South Africa the social classes are prominent barricades from equality in the country. Having the highest social status, the whites remain the most powerful while the Indians, like Bamjee, are below them and even lower are the Bantu, the native people of South Africa. Bamjee considers himself better than the Bantu and this is showed in the story when he snaps at her ââ¬Å"There you are! Thatââ¬â¢s what youââ¬â¢ve got for it. â⬠ââ¬ËItââ¬â¢ referring to her helping organize the protests and getting involved in the issues of the Bantu. Another part of the story that demonstrates Bamjeeââ¬â¢s belief of his superiority over the Bantu is after Mrs. Bamjee has been arrested and gone for two weeks. Bamjee is talking to himself out of rage saying ââ¬Å"For a crowd of natives whoââ¬â¢ll smash our shops and kill us in our houses when their time comes. â⬠, ââ¬Å"She will starve herself to death. â⬠, ââ¬Å"She will die there. â⬠, ââ¬Å"Devils who will burn and kill us. â⬠Clearly he believes that his wife must not be acting so ridiculous for people she is better than and clearly he believes the Bantu to be devilish creatures. Proposal Design Essay Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 750 words
Proposal Design - Essay Example The instances of the observed conduct disorder (if any) will be recorded. Contrary to the requirements of the ordinary scientific studies, this type of research doesnââ¬â¢t require any control group. For this reason, most of the experimental designs will hardly fit in this study. The most appropriate experimental design for this kind of study would be direct observation, since the symptoms of the conduct disorders are observable (Kenneth & Bruce, 2014). The observation method supports the use of between-subjects research design. In this research, the target population is composed of the patients who underwent conduct disorder treatment, either through the group or home therapy methods. Due to the nature of the target population, each member should be given an equal opportunity of forming the sample group. This is because the treatments that each of the members underwent were similar. In this research therefore, the sampling technique will be simple random sampling. This technique will give each of the members equal chances of being selected to form the sample group. The sample size will be made up of 30 participants, in an equal number, across the two treatment methods. 15 participants will be randomly selected to as representatives, depending on the method of conduct disorder they were subjected to. The nature of this study is comparative in nature (Thorndike & E. L. 1913). For this reason, as opposed to the ordinary scientific researches, this study would not require splitting the sample group into control and experimental groups (Lacort & M. O, 2014).à . The study compares the effectiveness of the home and group treatments for the treatment of conduct disorders. For this reason, in this study, the observations will be made on the persons treated under each category of treatment. The effectiveness of each treatment option will be determined by considering the number of

Orphan Brands Essay Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 5500 words
Orphan Brands - Essay Example 1). Marmite is one of those orphan brands that people can tell what it is just from sight, and often grow used to its particular flavor after a while of using it. Children in Britain are generally fed the substance from the time they are weaned, and most never grow out of it. It has a high B-vitamin content, as well as riboflavin and niacin-and as such is very healthy for them to eat. (The vitamin-B complex helps prevent anemia.) Plus, they grow used to the taste, so it is sort of like soda, potato chips, of other snacks that children in the Western world get accustom to as they grow older. The purpose of this paper is first, to discuss branding, and also to define orphan brands and how they are created, determine why they are named orphan brands, why orphan brands are bought by other companies, weather or not it was a good idea for the company to sell them, how strong was the brand, what benefits are achieved from the new company, advantage(s) and disadvantages(s) of the new company, changes that were made by the new company, brand, what benefits are achieved through the new company, and advantages and disadvantages. We are also going to look at the success of the "orphan brands" and if in fact the companies who chose to sell them should have retained the brands or not, and weather or not it would have been more profitable to do so. Marmite: Love it or Hate it For the sake of further explaining the product in question for that those who do not know, marmite is a popular way to make a sandwich and other similar meals. Here is a popular recipe for the Marmite and Cheese Dream, taken from (Marmite.com.uk, 2008, pg. 1): Marmite and Cheese Dream 1. Take a couple of slices of bread and spread with butter. 2. On one of the slices spread your Marmite on top of the butter (we'd recommend 4g, or about the end of a knife). 3. Now lay on a slice of your favourite hard cheese (e.g Cheddar, Emmental etc). 4. Finish off with some salad vegetables and close this delicious combo with the other slice of bread. Other ideas taken from (Marmite.com.uk, 2008, pg. 1) include include the following delicious treats: Marmite and cheese dream The Italian job Ocean lovers' Ploughman's Sunday roast Mediterranean chicken Veggie delight Tomato with a twist Savoury cheese and cucumber Simple cottage cheese open face Cheat's Welsh Rarebit Marmite is a very niche product, and for the people who live it there is nothing else that hits the spot quite like marmite. It is a product that some people will for sure hate, but those that love it will even go out of their way to follow the product across name changes and product transfers. People are for certain loyal to marmite, no matter who is making the brand they love so much. Marmite's getting a 21st Century Makeover Today Marmite is evolving with the trends of the modern food world. According to the discussed herein article entitled Groceries that Time Forgot (2008,pg. 1), "Marmite's getting a 21st-century makeover. You'll either love it or you'll hate it - but Marmite is henceforth to be sold in plastic squeezable bottles as well as in those old-fashioned glass jars." Bowden adds, "Creating a

How can omniscience and free will be recociled Essay
How can omniscience and free will be recociled - Essay Example Therefore, if God is omniscient, then He has the knowledge of what mankind will do in the future. The activities that he will undertake in coming days are already known by Him. Hence, the question of free will in human beings arises. Because God knows everything, then human beings do not have free will. In its definition, free will is described as the ability to make voluntary choices. It is the ability of an individual to choose something without being influenced by other factors. For example, God knows what you will do tomorrow or a day later or even know what you are going to request Him in prayer so that your wishes can be fulfilled. Because of the idea that God is omniscient and thus knows everything in this world that takes place, human beings do not have the choice of doing what they want, whenever they want to or in whichever manner. This is because their actions have already been pre determined by God. This idea that God controls all our actions right from being formed in the womb and being born into the world until our dieing days, has made some theologians state otherwise. They say that God knows everything but his omniscience is one that does not predetermine the actions of His creation. This has thus given rise to two types of omniscience in trying to describe God. Total omniscience was the first description of God. ... In this ideology, God before creating the Universe had already prepared the destiny of His creation and therefore some people have already been chosen to enter heaven on judgment day. This eliminates the idea of free will in humans in determining their destiny. An example of this idea that God exhibits total omniscience is evident in the Bible. In the book of Jeremiah chapter five, in verse five it is said that before we were born, God knew us as before putting us in our mothers' wombs. This statement by God shows that He already knew what His intentions for the world were. The other definition of God is of inherent omniscience. In this definition, God is described as limiting His ability in knowing everything by choice and thus favors the aspect of free will in humans. In the Biblical book of Deuteronomy in chapter 30, God allows free will in humans by stating that He has given them the choice between life and death. That if mankind abides by God's goodness he will enjoy eternal life in heaven. If he is devoid of goodness, then he is bound to leave his life after death in hell with Satan. Hence, the definition that God exhibits inherent omniscience is what is upheld by many theologians and other religious people. If He only showed total omniscience, then human beings would not have the ability to make their own choices. Everything they do would not be voluntarily generated but unknowingly fostered by God's command on His creation. (Stewart & Taylor) Because of the inherent omniscience of God, omniscience and humans' free will can be reconciled. God has given mankind the ability to choose his own destiny through the ten commands that were handed down to Moses in Mount Sinai. With the presentation of these commandments, God showed that He does not control the
